The Madera Coyote wrestling team not only ran its season dual-match record to 14-1 on the season and 4-1 in Tri-River Athletic Conference action with a 39-20 win over Clovis West, but it also helped head coach Joe Romine to a milestone as he gained career win No. 100.
"I feel fortunate to get 100 wins and it makes it even more special to do it here at Madera," Romine said. "I coached at some places where wins didn't come easily, and even though we have always had great talent and what I consider to be the best coaching staff anywhere here at Madera High, when you wrestle in the TRAC, you really have to earn every win."
Romine made two stops prior to coming back home to Madera High where he was the 1987 Valley champion at 152 pounds and finished fifth at the California State championships before a four-year career at Fresno State.
After compiling a record of 55-17 at Mendota and Liberty-Madera Ranchos, Romine assumed the reins of the Coyote program in 2006 from legendary Madera coach Corky Napier, and in his four years has a record of 45-17 coaching in arguably the toughest wrestling conference in the state.
