Barsotti leads Coyotes in shutout

Thursday, February 04, 2010

By Ronald Montez

When Madera High star goalkeeper Sarah Sierra injured her knee the day before the girls soccer game against Fresno Central High, Coyotes head coach Eli Liuba didn't panic.

Liuba had no reason to worry as junior goalkeeper Katie Barsotti came to the rescue Wednesday in the Coyotes' 1-0 win over the Grizzlies at Memorial Stadium.

Facing an aggressive Central offensive attack, Barsotti did her best Sierra impression by recording a shutout with numerous saves while constantly challenging the Grizzlies' kickers to end the Coyotes' four-game losing streak.

"Katie stepped up big," Liuba said. "To cover for Sarah, you have big shoes to fill because she's phenomenal but Katie came out like a champion. She dove for the ball, made saves and cleared it out well."
