Local schools recognize Black History Month
Thursday, February 04, 2010

Several Madera middle school libraries have created displays in observance of Black History Month.
"Each year in February, at both (Martin Luther King Jr. and Thomas Jefferson middle school) libraries, we recognize the contributions of great African Americans," said librarian Sharon Stockdale.
"Each library student aide is required to do a poster of some kind on an African-American of their choosing."
For her contribution to the contest, student aide Vianey Arenas, 14, decided to write about a white man who was instrumental in the Underground Railroad and helping African-American people. The Underground Railroad was a network of routes and safe houses for southern slaves trying to escape to freedom in the northern U.S.
